Getting a read on Notre Dame, initial thoughts

Posted by Jeff Nusser on March 21, 2008

Notre Dame coming up tomorrow. Here are some links for your thinking pleasure, along with some of my initial thoughts after watching a good portion of the Notre Dame beatdown of George Mason.

My initial reaction to Notre Dame? This is a team that likes to get up and down the floor offensively, and is at its best pushing the tempo. It’s also a team that is less-than-committed on defense, especially if it has to work very hard. That was George Mason’s biggest failing last night. The Patriots played right into the hands of the Irish, getting into a much higher paced game than they should have. I will bet the Cougs won’t make that same mistake.

Luke Harangody is pretty darn good. He’s got surprising agility for how dang goofy he looks with that silly flat-top haircut, and will be one heck of a challenge for Aron Baynes. I didn’t really get much of a sense of other strengths and weaknesses of the Irish from the game, mostly because George Mason made it so easy for them with porous transition defense predicated by ill-advised shots on offense.

Your thoughts?

I wanted to pt out that we utilized Baynes just like we should. Drive and dish to the big fella. He did have two standard post possessions, which I am fine with along as he is not the center of the offense.
I think you will see Cowgill on Harangody and expect for PT from Forrest. That is what I love about this team. If teams have a big man like Baynes they generally have a 6-7 or 6-8 PF, but we have a 6-10 guy with really long arms who can move! Its great for teams with a Macoullagh or Harangody or even Brockman for that matter.
I think we match up real well with ND and will frustrate them with our style of play. Rough and tumble big east style helps the cougs big time, especially because we lack depth underneath.

After taking a quick peek at the kenpom stats, it looks like the keys to the game for wazzu will be:
    1) transition defense. the coug’s transition d hasn’t been tested hard since ucla.
    2) dont allow the irish to get open looks from behind the arc. they shoot the 3 well (4th!) and like to hit them in transition.
    3) crash the boards. ND shoots under 50% inside the arc, so they are always looking for the offensive board (70th) and quick put-back.

No way does Cowgill guard Harangody, except when Baynes isn’t in the game. Somebody with beef has to guard Gody, because he is VERY strong. It will be interesting to see how much double teaming we try to do. If they let them bang — as they don’t let them do in the Pac-10 — then I think we can at least somewhat neutralize Harangody. But as you’ll see in the game thread post tomorrow, you don’t have to shut him down to win. You do, however, have to stop their 3-point shooting, as noted by Alan.

Gody worries me. I think Baynes fouls out in 18 minutes of play and we have a hard time with him. So, I will say that this game will come down to how well the Cougar offense does. SLOW DOWN THE GAME! Give the Irish as few possessions as possible, and they must shoot the ball well with a high shooting percentage to avoid letting the Irish break out on the run. They need to take their time and make their shots and they will win a close, low scoring game.

If WSU doubles Harangody down low, then those three-point shooters will start firing which is not good for the Cougs. I have the Irish winning this in my bracket. Of course, we could rename my bracket “Disaster on Paper” or “The Demise of Dr Pezz,” but that’s another story.

P.S. I don’t think anyone has held Harangody to single digit scoring when he played a full game. This will be the key match-up.

Gody is not the key matchup. You’ll see why tomorrow.

Watch out for Hillesland. TJ can steal and if K-mac is hot, there will be trouble. The game will start VERY fast.
