Winthrop no stranger to upsets

Posted by Jeff Nusser on March 17, 2008

As I’m sure you’ll hear plenty over the next couple of days, Winthrop beat higher-seeded Notre Dame to open last year’s tournament in Spokane. That team wasn’t the same as this team — more on that later — but one key ingredient in an upset is that a team genuinely believes it can do it.

Here are a couple of videos from CBS to refresh your memory.

Getting a read on Winthrop

Posted by Jeff Nusser on March 17, 2008

I’m working on a post with my thoughts on how the bracket shapes up for the Cougs, but to tide you over until then, I thought I’d throw some links your way to get a read on WSU’s first round opponent, the Winthrop Eagles.

If you find other links you want to pass along, feel free to do so in the comments. We’ll create a static link box to the right sometime tomorrow.

Tony, the Zone is Your Friend

Posted by Jo-Jo on March 17, 2008

I want to preface this post by letting all you readers know that I started writing this thing well over a month ago. It was table, along with most of my other feeling on this site while I was dealing with off the site issues. But, now that I’m back, and inspired by the glimpse of the 2-3 zone we witnessed last week against the Cardinal, it’s time to drop the hammer. Here we go . . .

A sign of a great coach is that they can adjust to their personnel. I have seen highly respected coaches over the years begin to flounder because they try to force player into a style of play that does not match their skill sets or athletic abilities. Players are what they are on a daily basis and development doesn’t happen over night. But, a game plan can.

Tourney Challenge

Think I’m not the expert Jim Moore thinks I am? Think you can beat my bracket?

Then join the WSU HOOPS bracket challenge (sponsored by no one).

There will be no fabulous prizes, unless you count the opportunity to show up the authors and readers of this site a prize in and of itself. (Remember, I’m a teacher.) The good news for you, of course, is that I usually stink at filling out my bracket, so it shouldn’t be too tough for you to make me look dumb.

To join us, here’s what you do.

  1. Click on this link.
  2. Log in. If you don’t have a Yahoo! account, create one.
  3. Name and fill out your bracket.
  4. Bask in your glory as other group members’ brackets go up in flames.

It’s that simple. I did it last year on my other blog, and it went fairly well. The brackets close just before tipoff of the first game on Thursday, so do your bracket ASAP and don’t miss out on your opportunity to show off a little. I’ll post standings throughout each day of the Tournament.

Sorry for the silence – thoughts to come

Posted by Jeff Nusser on March 17, 2008

Just my luck that on the weekend that I generally have the most to say, I was completely unable to get to a computer.

A weekend that began with traveling over to the west side for a professional conference was interrupted by taking my son to the hospital late Saturday night (he’s sick, but OK), getting home at 2 a.m., driving around Sunday to find a place open to fix the flat tire on our car (thank you, Mr. Roofing Nail!), finding out that one of my son’s prescriptions would cost $266 (!), driving three hours back to Wenatchee then going back to Wal-Mart to buy my son the humidifier he needed, wrestling with my screaming son who doesn’t really prefer nebulizers, and finished with me curled up comatose on the couch thanks to something I ate earlier in the evening.

But, I’m back at work this morning and excited to write. After all, this is the most fun time of year to be doing what we do. I’ll have my thoughts on the Cougs and their draw later, as well as an exciting and fun opportunity for readers of the blog.

Just bear with me!
