Some positives to take away from Thursday

Posted by Jeff Nusser on February 8, 2008

We already pointed out what mostly went wrong in the loss to UCLA, but perhaps Tony Bennett summed it up best after the game:

“Plays have to be made when two teams are defending that hard. … When you’re playing that kind of team, your best isn’t always good enough. Sometimes you have to come up with something a little better than that.”

And I think that’s spot on. It’s not too much of a stretch to work from the premise at this point that UCLA is just a better basketball team than WSU, as it’s safe to say that the addition of Kevin Love and the loss of Ivory Clark sent these two teams in opposite directions. If we go ahead and work from that premise, I think I can prove that we’re not just negative nancies around here by channeling my inner Vince Grippi to give you some of the real positives I saw come out of that contest.

We’ve gone multimedia

Posted by Jeff Nusser on February 8, 2008

As I look for ways to make the blog better, I’ve finally figured out ways to add video to our site. The youtube videos are pretty straight forward, but ESPN was a little trickier. Alas, we’ve figured it out, so we’ll periodically pass along some of the cooler stuff we find that has relevance to WSU.

Unfortunately, ESPN has almost no Pac-10 highlights in its video content because — surprise! — the Pac-10 has almost no games on the network, and I’m guessing they only have online rights to highlights of their own broadcasts. However, there is this “news and notes” segment from Andy Katz, which features some thoughts on the injuries to Arizona’s Nic Wise and UCLA’s Luc Richard Mbah a Moute.

Totally unrelated to WSU, but cool anyway

Posted by Jeff Nusser on February 8, 2008

As I was perusing some stats at, I noticed that the national leader in blocked shot percentage was blocking 20 percent of the 2-point shots while he’s on the floor.

Digest that for a second. One out of every five 2-point shots that is put up while this guy is on the floor is blocked by him. Not the team. By him. Just one guy.

Turns out the guy’s name is Kenny George, and he plays for UNC-Ashville. I had never heard of him before. I’m not sure why, because he’s 7-foot-7. Check out this video of him. You seriously can’t make stuff like this up.

When you finally pick your jaw up off the floor, you can check out this ESPN feature on him. Unreal.

Welcome our newest writer!

Posted by Jeff Nusser on February 8, 2008

WSU HOOPS has been a one-man show since its inception a few months ago. No longer.

Please welcome our newest writer, Jo-Jo Roberts, who’ll be dropping his vast basketball knowledge on all of you from time to time.

Jo-Jo and I went to high school together, went to WSU together, lived at CCN together, made a lot of stupid decisions together — that photo of us at Barn Bash, circa 1998, was one of the least incriminating ones I could find from our college years — wrote at The Daily Evergreen together, joined a fraternity together, found Christ together and were in each other’s weddings. So it’s safe to say we’re pretty tight, and go back a little ways.

Besides our previous relationship and the fact that he comments here so often that it wasn’t much of a stretch to make him a full-time contributor, I invited him to join the team because he knows a lot about basketball — especially X’s and O’s, which aren’t always my strong suit — and he is a ridiculously passionate Coug after having worked in the athletic department for the majority of his, um, many years in Pullman. Also, variety is always good for you, the reader, since Jo-Jo and I don’t always see eye-to-eye on everything.

Be looking for his first post — on whether zone defense should be an option for this team — in the next day or so.

I stand corrected (sort of)

Posted by Jeff Nusser on February 8, 2008

I put up last night’s post on the rebounding stats off the preliminary box score and play-by-play from ESPN, which I didn’t realize doesn’t account for team rebounds where the ball goes out of bounds to a team, so let me set the record straight after going to the WSU basketball site this morning.

Officially, the Cougs had a few team offensive rebounds, especially in the first half when the game was close. The final margin actually was 29-20 rebounds overall, and 12-7 in offensive rebounds. But the final margin in second chance points — officially — still was bad at 12-4, essentially the difference in the game.

Another little nugget that made the difference? Points off turnovers, a stat that wasn’t available last night: UCLA 21 points off 14 WSU turnovers; WSU 11 points off 15 UCLA turnovers. That’s a huge difference.

To sum up, UCLA outscored WSU 33-15 in combined second-chance points and points off turnovers in a game that was decided by eight points. Uh, yeah. Tough to figure out where this one went wrong …
