All you need to know about tonight

Posted by Jeff Nusser on February 7, 2008

With one minute to go in the game …

UCLA: 27 rebounds, 12 offensive rebounds, 10 second-chance points.

WSU: 11 rebounds, 2 offensive, 2 second-chance points.

Rare is it that further analysis is unnecessary, but this is one of those cases. The offense was probably good enough to win, but the defense — which includes rebounding, as Marques Johnson pointed out on 52 different occasions tonight — was not.

Again.

You can talk about all the points in the paint and offensive efficiency that you want to, but it comes down to a matter of pride and heart. Washington St was in the game until the last 5 minutes when they gave in to that Bruin pressure. The leaders of that team(whomever they may be) have to keep that unit together during adversity, which shouldn’t have been too tough because they’re at home. The few close-ups of the Wash St huddles that were shown on TV, Coach Bennett looked more nervous and flustered than the players. He seemed to defer to Low or Weaver in figuring out what adjustments needed to be made.

They gave in to the Bruin pressure because they had nobody to rebound and, quite frankly, they’re just not as good as UCLA, which might give Duke a run for its money as the best team in the country right now. They did not panic, they did not have a sudden spate of turnovers … they just couldn’t keep up with a better team.

I take that back, they had turnovers on three out of four possessions at one point from about the 7 minute mark to the 5 minute mark when UCLA got some separation. I stand corrected.
