GAME THREAD: The Citadel (4-5) at No. 7 WSU (9-0)

Posted by Jeff Nusser on December 20, 2007

KeyArena (Seattle), 7:30 p.m. PT
TV: FSN

The Cougs are expecting potentially 12,000 lustily screaming fans for this matchup, which ought to be a blowout on the order of Mississippi Valley State. The Bulldogs are 264th in the nation in offensive efficiency and 340th nationally in defensive efficiency. The Cougs are 24th in offensive efficiency and 12th in defensive efficiency.

A lot of people have made a big deal about the fact that we can’t seem to get a big-name program to play in this game, but I don’t see it as so bad. Essentially, this will be a big WSU alumni rally — the kind of game where we pat each other on the back and celebrate how far we’ve come as a program. The outcome will never be in doubt, as we’ll get to watch our heroes shake off some of the rust as well as watch some of the lesser-known players get some PT in front of a big crowd.

What will I be looking for on the court? Well, I want to see how focused this team looks after 11 days off against yet another severely overmatched opponent. Will they value the basketball? Will they work as hard on the defensive end as they will have to all year long? You know, the typical stuff. This is the beginning of the stretch run to really get ready for Pac-10 play, so we want to see some momentum building for that brutal opening to the conference schedule.

I won’t be attending the game in person, so I should be able to post some thoughts here tonight. And if you’re loooking for a game that ought to be a great contest, check out Pitt vs. Duke at 4 p.m. on ESPN. Also, Gonzaga travels to Oklahoma. Should be a great night for hoops. Feel free to post your thoughts throughout the day heading up to the contest and into the evening.

Oh, and if you’re looking for the various previews for tonight available on the Internet, check out coughoops.com. He does a great job compiling all the stories out there each day.

I know its not our “style” but i’d love to see us pour it on tonight early so we can get some glimpses of Ambercrombie, Sauls and some of the other youngsters. Alos some long minutes for Koprevica would be great. He was coming on strong as a lethal swing man last year when he went down against the quackers and it would be awesome to have him back in the act again. just one more scoring threat, and good size.

it was great to see Ambercrombie, cross, Henry and Co. play. I think Nic and Harm seem a bit tight all year so far, but loosened up with more time on the floor tonight. It was when they entered that we imediately gave up a 13-0 run. kind of alarming. Overall, great job of eventually grabbing a big lead so we could empty the bench in the second half. Games like this are great for team chemistry. the whole team is back at the hotel tonight with something to talk about since they all played. As a former highschool JV bench warming fire hazard superscrub for the ages, i can personally attest to the boost you get seeing some hard earned PT that translates to extra effort in practice.

    “Baynes”, Australian for “badass”.

Sorry about the lack of game comments — I ended up watching the game at a friend’s house. I’ll have a post on some of my thoughts tomorrow. All in all, a pretty solid perfomance that was probably about what you’d expect them to do against a severely overmatched team.

Oh, and Longball — I was the guy who WISHED he was the JV superscrub. That’s why I became a sportswriter …

Word on the forums is that Harm broke a finger in practice and is out for 4-6 weeks. Bummer for sure. Who do you think will have to step up their game the most to fill the void?

That’s Niko’s spot offensively, but Forrest will have to step up as a reserve in the paint. They’ve been dropping Harm to defend the post when the starters are in foul trouble.

When did this injury happen? Yesterday? Harm was all over the floor Thursday night.
