Call in CSI: WSU employee leaked logo to high school

Posted by Jeff Nusser on December 14, 2007

OK, so maybe “leaked” is a little too strong of a word here, but I think it nicely represents the quasi ridiculousness of this ongoing saga regarding Cooper High School in Abilene, Texas, using a near replica logo of one that was in use at WSU decades ago.

This morning, the Reporter News out of Abilene is reporting that the logo actually had been sent by former WSU football coach Bert Clark who was old army buddies with the football coach at Cooper, Merrill Green.

Said Green: “I would think Washington State would love somebody to use their logo.”

No way, pal. Not us. We’re big time.

Of course, the good people of Abilene are pretty ticked. How ticked? If you’ve ever read the book Friday Night Lights (and if you haven’t, you should), you can imagine the uproar in a similar town where — this is not a typo — 10,000 people regularly attend the high school football games. My guess is that they probably wouldn’t care about the logo change if it wasn’t on the football uniforms …

Oh, and if you’re curious about getting a read on the pulse of the community, check out this Web poll. The leader in the clubhouse will shock you. Shock you!
